Well she's at it again, Kirsty Alley the gorgeous beauty from the 80's sitcom Cheers is back in the lime light and unfortunately for the wrong reasons. Once again she is spruiking the worthless lies of the diet industry, replete with her own huge arse. Yes Kirsty has after a pregnant pause from her Opera appearance and weight loss regime with jenny Craig once again piled on the pounds and then some to tell us that she has her product that will see the extra kilos slip into oblivion.

In for a penny in for a pound

Yes its circus time again only this time Kirsty intend to make money from her fat for herself, she has a new product in the market place and a great web site looking very much the professional nutritional information site, delivering a drink that she purports will see the wait drip off her acolytes that follow her lead.

If it sounds too good it usually is

Drinking your way to being slim is really just a joke; we were made to eat that’s why we evolved with teeth. Unfortunately those that weight challenged find that supplanting meals with liquid dramatically helps the weight melt away. Well the liquid diet no doubt does assist with weight loss but like most diets the weight loss is temporary and once normal eating patterns return so does the weight. So unless you’re going to spend the rest of your life drinking your weight away and your health i would suggest this isn’t a path to go down.

Kirsty may do the turn on the catwalk

So once again when Kirsty goes down the catwalk and does her little turn and we all go wow, yea it works, it doesn’t, the bonus is when the weight does go back on for kirsty unlike her followers that will be out of pocket and fat , Kirsty will be cashed up and fat. Better fat and rich than fat and poor. Oh well i still have my fond memories of Kirsty when she was drop dead gorgeous rather than drop dead fat.

McDonalds gets the tick

By now most people would have hear that the Australian heart foundation (ANHF)have credited McDonald's
with their tick.Yep Maccas now has food that has been approved by the heart foundation.But what does this mean, has Maccas turned over a new leaf is fast food now OK for those fighting the losing Battle of the bulge?

So whats the deal?

Maccas have complied with ANHF strict guidelines for salt and fat, not in all their foods but only a small selection of meals.Should the tick meal be accompanied with fries and coke the tick is automatically void,the food selection from the menu must adhere to the guidelines to apply.Money paid for the tick is plowed back into monitoring the food ensuring that it continues to comply.

Mac attack

The reasoning is though that McDonald's may be using the tick to surreptitiously sell their other items such as big Macs , cheeseburgers and fries etc.Well this is a real risk but with one out of every three meals being fast food its better to have a healthier choice than not.But for those thinking this is the Greene light to eat Maccas forget it! fast food is occasional food not a staple as many assume.Preparing your own food and eating at home is always a better option than eating out regardless of whether the food has a tick or not.  Most fast food is a ticking time bomb for the  average lard arse so best to circumvent a coronary event and eat at home, and i don't mean take away! 

Organic marketing ploy

 

When we buy organic food we do so with the expectation that we are buying a superior
product, one that is better for our health and the environment. But is organic food all that it’s cracked up to be or is it just another marketing ploy designed to get health conscious consumers to spend more money?  The last time i bought an organic piece of fruit it was battered and bruised and half eaten by bugs and even then i had to fight a hippy for it.

The environmental benefit

I think we can say that the use of organic farming principles is in the long term more sustainable and environmental sound than intensive farming. I prefer to buy organic eggs because i know they have treated the hens reasonably humane and without antibiotics. I don’t often eat pork as a result of the inhuman way the animals are treated, and if I do have the occasionally piece of porcine I try to ensure that it is organic. The end result either way is that the animal ends up being broken down to amino's the building blocks for protein structures, but at least i can comfort myself with knowing the three little pigs didn’t have to suffer the cruelty of being confined to a pen the size of a postage stamp, and a diet of antibiotics.

The heath benefits

Now this is where it starts to get a bit airy fairy, the greenies and the organic farmers would have us believe that eating organic food is better for our health and can reduce the risks of cancer. Yet the assertion that organics are superior to intensively farmed food isn’t supported by legitimate studies, most of the purported befits are just anecdotal and driven by the love affair tree huggers have with their sprouts, nuts and seeds.

Should you buy Organic?

Regardless of what i have stated i would buy organic food for several reasons, the food does usually taste better regardless that you may have had to share some of your apple with a bug, also the environmental aspects such as no chemicals or antibiotics. The human treatment of the animals up until they meet their maker is also a strong consideration when i purchase food. Is it any better for my health? Maybe but unlikely if you look at the evidence for and against. At the end of the day your decision will be based on financial constraints, humanitarian issues and the taste factor.
