I was giving some thought to why old body builders end up falling by the wayside, and I've concluded they're are a number of reasons. One of the main issues that older Body builders face is coming to terms with life after steroids. And yes, professional body builders take drugs, even the natural BB are inclined to surreptitiously use them because as we know, winning is everything. So with the juice comes great returns in regard to size and strength, but steroids also mask injuries, its only when coming off the regime of drugs the injuries become apparent. So we assume that as we age we lose the ability to maintain some serious quality muscle.Sure we suffer from age related sarcopenia, but to a large extent it can be circumvented with the right approach to exercise and nutrition. But injuries have a way of curtailing not only training but also our enthusiasm to train.Theres nothing worse than doing a bench press and feeling acute pain in the rotator cuff, or squatting and finding the old knees sounding like tinder wood and hurting.
Whats the answer?
Think long term not short term, body building and life is journey not a destination sure you can train hard but realise that even machines break down and need servicing. The longer you keep your body free from injuries the longer you can maintain the regime of staying fit and muscular. So in conclusion its not age that has older bodybuilders falling by the wayside, its injuries and and not planning for the long haul in life.
